With a punk-flavored art-rock children’s rhyme over a 6 count, Suzy Callahan keeps her listeners riveted and her sound fresh. It’s deliberately arbitrary and deeply embellished, with a soft focus like a scattergun. Suzy Callahan is indie rock’s own molecular gastronomist: she finds inspiration and recipes in the esoteric world of jazz chord extensions and modal tonality, and in doing so creates her own sound and flavor; an organic yield from artificial inputs.

It’s a slow and brooding development of the minor chord root, with easy rhymes and a spacious counterpoint between guitar and bass. The result is an introspective track with a lot to come back to. It features many layers of idiosyncratic artistry, and would do well in any scene with foreshadowing; there is a constant sense of unsettled restlessness, and a bit of poetic mystery at work.

Suzy's songs have appeared in the TLC series Breaking Amish, played on KCRW, and featured on NPR. This song is featured on our Lost Treasure - Indie Rock playlist.
