What at first feels raw and utterly unadorned builds into a controlled explosion of stacked vocals, acoustic strumming, and washy snare rolls.

With an expressive and unique timbre to her voice, a bit like a cross between Nora Jones and Beth Orton, emma miller brings us a personal statement about acceptance and humanity. Written as an open-eyed testament to the human cost of war through the eyes of a refugee, what at first feels raw and utterly unadorned builds into a controlled explosion of stacked vocals, acoustic strumming, and washy snare rolls.

It's a masterfully understated production from Sam Welch, with such a dry and present piano that you can hear the damper closing and lifting again. For a moment we are suspended inside a fermata, hanging on the citrus of that wry falsetto. With her new single Wasteland emma miller is able to make even the silence speak.
