Parisian six-piece electro-funk band L'Imperatrice returns from 2 years of life on the road with a devastatingly attractive new offering, their first since 2018 release Matahari. "Exit" and its French version "Fou" embody the denouement of a decadent decade, bringing together a flair for fluttering synth melodies with a playful sonic aesthetic and an abiding love of disco grooves.

"Impératrice" is French for "Empress," and they are self-described as having "one crown, but many faces." Charles de Boisseguin transitioned from eccentric, well-respected music journalist to band leader years ago, and this coronation of L'Impératrice as the next big indie breakout from Paris was almost a decade in the making. Boisseguin and band will make their Coachella debut this October, and the North American tour that was originally scheduled for March has also been postponed until then. Thankfully, we have this bass-driven party-jam to keep us motivated. With a slick, retro-styled production polish, tight breaks, and a uniquely bilingual vocal experience, the music of L'Impératrice is a breath of fresh air on a crowded dance floor. With these stylish captains of space-pop sitting on the throne, the world of indie electronic just got a little bit funkier.
