Joe Jenneman - The Underneath

Something about this track hit me straight in the feels. You could make the argument that you learn the most about a society in the stuff that they don't talk about, and I suppose it is a legacy of our puritanical foundation here is the USA that everyday conversations rarely ever touch on anything of substance. "The Underneath," the latest from West Michigan singer-songwriter Joe Jenneman, does much to right that wrong. Maybe it is time to put the spotlight on regular people with unsexy problems.

Well they don’t make movies ‘bout people like me
Burned out on whiskey and amphetamines
No romantic breakthrough or message to preach
And they don’t like to shine light on the underneath

Here, it is the authenticity that comes through loud and clear, as well as an intricate and slightly unique affect on the acoustic guitar that adds to the  improvisational feel. At the end of the day, it's the story here that feels like it could come from anywhere: the idea that every passerby has an equally important tale to tell. One of EARMILK’s Artists to Watch for 2025, Joe Jenneman is based in Nashville. "The Underneath" is the title track from his latest EP. You should listen to it.
