After nearly two decades of rigorous training in ballet, theatre, and voice, Devin Tuel needed to break free from the oppressive rules of academia. She decided to find her natural voice, write from the heart, and go in a new direction.

She took her art from the recital hall to the coffee shops of Greenwich village, and spent some years living the bohemian life of a broke-but-happy songwriter. She took the opportunities that were available to her, kept her focus on the craft, and eventually teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Stephen Harms. This year they release another labor-of-love full-length production, their third, entitled Something You Have which was written entirely while maintaining a heavy touring schedule, and recorded during a brief downtime in Chicago.

The long notes on the B3 will give you the feeling of classic soul, while the lazy triplet strum on the guitar and the angelic vocal will pull you in with the purity of the melody and the haunting sense of melancholy. Something You Have, the music video from Native Harrow, is a bittersweet moment of longing, lost in the visceral projections of a vivid imagination.

Alone but never lonely, patient but always waiting

Happier Now (out April 12 on Different Time Records), is a set of nine songs recorded and mixed by Alex Hall (JD McPherson, The Cactus Blossoms, Pokey LaFarge) at Chicago’s Reliable Recorders. The album was co-produced by Hall, Tuel, and her bandmate, multi-instrumentalist Stephen Harms.

This song is featured on our Lost Treasure - Soul playlist.
