This song surprised me with a 14-beat phrase over the verse; I have always been a fan of that sort of conceptual creativity. That little push of a quick bar after the first 4 beats is the perfect off-set for the pull of the lazy molasses-groove: it makes the whole song chewy like a deep-fried candy-bar.

Just lean back, into that loping slow-funk pocket, and let it move you. This kind of dry drum sound reminds me of indie-rock from Beck, but the lyricism and vocal performance is straight out of the R & B pocket on a D’Angelo song - the draggy bass, the slightly dirty suitcase Rhodes, and the high-soul of a crackling falsetto.
