27-year-old retro-soul songwriter and performer Valère Géron was born in the Netherlands and is now living in Sweden. His latest single “You Don’t Want My Heart” is an upbeat instant classic in the vein of someone like Raphael Saadiq—incorporating a lively bass line, layers of soaring vocal harmony, and a dry, slightly shuffled drum beat that speaks equally of Motown and the urge to dance your troubles away.

This fun song was recorded in Oost-Maarland, a small village at the southern Dutch border, where Valère finished writing the lyrics a few weeks after getting the initial idea for it. This vibrant combination of retro tones and lively pop energy takes notes from Amy Winehouse, The Gorillaz, and even The Police. With his debut, Valère Géron connects the dots from his musical past to deliver catchy, sing-along melodies while telling the story of a passionate but troubled relationship.

Everyone can see our love is bad
Yet it’s something we don’t mind
I cannot sleep but I sit around your side
Walked right in a storm
Now we are lost inside

Oh my love I fear somebody will make you cry
But then I look at you
Baby I gotta say bye

No you don’t want my heart
No you won’t get far

I felt like expressing that last push you have to give when you’re at the end of the road with someone. This single is a poised step in the direction I’ve been looking to take for years and I’m very excited to explore this terrain further with upcoming work that "You Don’t Want My Heart" lays the blueprint for. — Valère Géron

Valère's roots in music began with his elementary years, when he started singing in the school choir and performing at family gatherings. Coming from a long line of singers, it was only a matter of time before he followed the same path.
