We've written about this artist before. For my money, Toria Rainey is one of the most original and exciting songwriters to launch from the East Coast in recent memory. Latest single "Cowboy Song" delivers a signature take on the theme of self identity, and gives cover for anyone who is frustrated with having to constantly fight with issues of acceptance and social hazing.
I wrote Cowboy Song because I was sick of being asked to prove my queerness. It's for people who feel like not enough, or want to feel the strange grief of being invisible, even in your own community.
At its core, Cowboy Song is about the pain of not feeling queer enough, and dealing with a recurring cycle of self deprecation. Beyond that, 'cowboyhood' is a metaphor for feeling like an outsider: a mythical construct at which we project our strength. With a stylistic nod to both Country and Soul music, "Cowboy Song" delivers a genre-bending alt pop anthem with a unique lyrical personality–one part intimate confessional, and one part lonesome warrior.
Again, in terms of tonal quality and sharp decision-making on the production side, I have no notes. I love this bass line, and the way it moves. The percussion feels sparse, but effective, and I am obsessed with the pizzicato string tone. "Cowboy Song" features an important message of self love, coupled with a warm production aesthetic and a hint of Wild West that pairs well with the theme of tragic misunderstanding. It's a deep one.
This is the kind of song to change their world when the right person hears it at the right time.
They say there's no right way but I'm doing it wrong
That world is telling me I don't belong
But if you knew my soul, you'd know it's true
My heart says I'm one thing, they say another
Stick to the role of her friend or his lover
If they don't give me the chance, what can I do?
